A property manager calls on Thursday. Ransomware hit Tuesday night. Their bookkeeper’s home laptop, the office file server, and the QuickBooks machine on the LAN all share the same nightmare: encrypted production data, and the “backup” was a USB drive plugged into the server that ransomware found in twenty minutes.
That is hybrid work in 2026. Not a policy deck. Endpoints in three zip codes, one IT shop responsible for all of them.
If you run an MSP or break/fix business, you already know the 3-2-1 rule. Three copies, two media types, one offsite. The hard part is turning that into an offsite backup solution you can deploy, monitor, and actually restore from when the client’s worst day shows up.
What Hybrid Changed About Offsite Backup
Pre-2020 playbooks assumed a LAN boundary. Backup server in the closet, agents on office PCs, done.
Hybrid blew that up:
- Laptops leave the building and stay off VPN half the week
- Home upload speeds (often 10–35 Mbps asymmetric) become the bottleneck, not your datacenter
- Users save to Desktop and Documents, not the file server you backed up
- Sync tools (M365, Dropbox) feel like backup until someone mass-deletes or ransomware syncs the damage
The problem: an offsite backup solution for hybrid teams has to follow the user, encrypt before cloud upload, and keep a local vault for restores that do not wait on residential upload at 2 PM.
What that means for you: one policy per asset class, not one schedule for the whole company.
Map 3-2-1 Onto a Real Client (Example)
Take a 12-person professional services firm you support:
| Asset | Production | Local Copy | Offsite Copy |
| Partner laptop (remote 3 days/week) | SSD on the road | Local vault on the laptop | Wasabi or Synology C2 bucket |
| Office file server | RAID NAS | NAS share as vault target | Same agent job, offsite vault enabled |
| SQL / LOB server | On-prem VM | Optional LAN vault | Nightly image + file backup offsite |
| Shared drive heavy users | Mapped S: | Workstation agent includes network paths | Blocks upload offsite after local seed |
That is 3-2-1 in deployable form. Production plus local vault plus cloud object storage. Two media (disk + cloud). One copy geographically and logically separated from the office LAN credentials.
Most WholesaleBackup partners run exactly this: branded agents, local vault where speed matters, cloud offsite (Wasabi, Backblaze B2, AWS S3, Google Cloud, Synology C2) for ransomware and site loss. You pay the cloud vendor directly. We do not mark up storage.
Dedicated self-hosters can still use WholesaleBackup Server when they want the vault on their own Windows box. Cloud offsite plus local vault is what we see on most new hybrid rollouts.
Why Sync Is Not an Offsite Backup Solution
Here is the mistake that still costs recoveries:
OneDrive and SharePoint are collaboration. Delete a folder, empty recycle bin, or encrypt files locally and the sync engine does its job. You lose versions unless retention policies were configured months ago by someone who no longer works there.
Mapped-drive “backups” on the same VLAN as production fail the same way. Modern ransomware hunts connected shares and attached USB backups.
An offsite backup solution needs separation:
- Agent encrypts with AES-256 before data leaves the endpoint
- Offsite vault uses credentials production does not browse daily
- Version history and retention you set per client, not per vendor default
WholesaleBackup includes unlimited file versions and custom retention (30 days, 90 days, whatever the SLA says). Point-in-time recovery means picking the Tuesday 6 AM job before Wednesday’s encryption, not praying the sync recycle bin still has it.
Recovery Planning (Not Just Backup Reports)
Green checks lie. Plan in RPO/RTO plain English first:
- RPO: How much data loss is acceptable? A remote laptop doing hourly block increments might tolerate 60 minutes. A monthly-archive server might not.
- RTO: How fast do they need files or systems back? Local vault answers “accountant needs one folder in ten minutes.” Offsite answers “building flooded, new hardware Friday.”
Test restores on a calendar. File, folder, SQL, disk image. Our partners report the same failure mode: backups ran for months, nobody pulled a restore until ransomware. Misconfigured paths, wrong retention, or empty sets you never caught.
Your stack should surface that early:
- Alerts on failed and missed jobs (not just failures)
- Scheduled reports to your inbox before the client notices
- Rigorous sync check on major cloud backends (enabled by default on AWS S3, Google Cloud, and Wasabi in our platform) so silent “backup completed” jobs that did not land blocks get caught on the next cycle
That last piece matters on hybrid links where uploads flap. Hardware glitches and bad sectors are not theoretical. We built sync verification in because “successful” jobs that hollowed out over time showed up in real support tickets.
Hybrid Bandwidth and Scheduling
Two things make remote backup painful: upload speed and business hours.
Throttle during work hours. Residential and small-business uplinks cannot absorb a full seed at 9 AM. Schedule heavy jobs overnight. Use bandwidth limits in agent settings so accountants on Zoom do not blame you for stutter.
Block differential after the first run. Initial full backup might take hours on a 200 GB laptop at 12 Mbps upload. After that, only changed 1MB blocks move. Daily windows shrink to minutes. That is how you keep aggressive RPO without owning the client’s pipe all day.
Local vault first on restore. When a partner needs twelve files before a deposition, pull from LAN or endpoint vault. Offsite fills gaps. You are not streaming the entire history over home cable if you do not have to.
Ransomware and the Offsite Layer
Assume production is gone. Plan anyway.
- Schedule disk images offsite, not just on a USB in the server room. Some strains hunt VHD and backup folders on attached storage.
- Retention depth: hybrid discovery lag (user notices Friday what broke Tuesday) pushes many shops to 30–90 day minimums on endpoints with write access to critical data.
- Restore to replacement hardware: install your branded agent on a new machine, same account and encryption key, pull history from the old endpoint’s backup set. No ransom negotiation required.
“We were able to quickly restore our clients’ data without any issues using their last good backup — saving them from total data loss and stopping their business!”
— Joe Massa, IT Administrator, BullDog Technologies (Vanguard Systems)
That is what offsite backup is for in our platform: encrypted copies ransomware on the LAN cannot reach, with local vault for speed when it can.
Partners who want belt-and-suspenders can sync the same client data to multiple offsite vaults (up to seven remote destinations in one deployment). Mix Wasabi and a second region, or C2 plus B2. Hybrid teams with compliance-driven separation use that more than solo shops.
What You Configure in WholesaleBackup
Practical checklist for rolling out an offsite backup solution under your brand:
- Brand build: white-label installer, Backup Ops Web Console
- Storage: connect your cloud account (no platform markup)
- Local vault: on or off per endpoint; NAS path where the client has one
- Retention / versions: per client SLA
- Throttling: business-hours caps on remote workers
- Monitoring: alerts, reports, sync integrity on cloud backends
- Pilot restore: one file, one folder, one image before fleet deploy
SQL Server, Exchange, network paths, and disk images are in the base platform. Servers priced like workstations on licensing. Month-to-month, no per-restore fees.

We were able to quickly restore our clients data without any issues using their last good backup – saving them from total data loss and stopping their business!

I am very impressed with the level of customer care and communication you have put forth into making sure that our setup with you guys goes smoothly. It is rare nowadays to find vendors that take pride in their products as well as show concern for a client’s well-being.

After using another white-label cloud backup solution for years, switching to WholesaleBackup has been a lifesaver. MUCH less maintenance, cost, bandwidth, and the U.S. based support is the stellar. The software and interface is SO much simpler and easy to use. I would recommend WholesaleBackup to any MSP looking to streamline their cloud backup system.

After trying multiple name brand backup vendors, we finally Partnered with WholesaleBackup and couldn’t be happier with the functionality and cost.

Your response time to any and all my request is far superior to any customer service I’ve ever received my ENTIRE CAREER.
